CalMac confirms Campbeltown ferry service will not run in summer 2027

Transport Scotland has accepted CalMac's advice that the seasonal Campbeltown service should not operate in summer 2027, because committing one of the few suitable vessels would cut fleet resilience and risk disruption to lifeline routes.

CalMac has confirmed that its seasonal Campbeltown ferry service will not operate in summer 2027, following a decision by Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport.

Transport Scotland agreed with CalMac's analysis after examining options including deploying existing vessels, chartering additional tonnage and longer-term fleet solutions. CalMac said reinstating the service would reduce fleet flexibility and raise the risk of disruption elsewhere on its network, including to lifeline services, at a time when many summer routes already run at or near capacity.

Chief executive Duncan Mackison cited the age of the fleet, the need for vessel resilience and uncertainty over future vessel availability. CalMac said it will keep working with Transport Scotland and local stakeholders on options for a sustainable service beyond 2027.
