Stora Enso and Finnlines have expanded their cooperation so Stora Enso will use Finnlines' Green Lane service for sea transport of packaging board and wood-based products. Green Lane is Finnlines' low-carbon shipping solution for customers that want to cut emissions from maritime transport. It offers renewable biofuel and electricity-based alternatives to conventional fossil-fuelled shipping.
Finnlines says the renewable biofuel option can cut well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared with fossil fuels. For transport covered by the service, Finnlines replaces an equivalent amount of fossil energy with energy from alternative fuels within its fleet network. Emission reductions are independently verified each year against standards and frameworks including EU MRV, FuelEU Maritime, ISO 14064 and EN 16258. The biofuel is ISCC-certified, and customers receive a certificate confirming the reported reductions.
Finnlines describes the Stora Enso cooperation as a practical implementation of Green Lane in the packaging board and wood-based products segment. The service is also offered to industrial customers in forest industry products, steel and metals, automotive, machinery, chemicals and construction materials, on selected routes where renewable energy is available. The company's network links hubs across the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Through its North Sea & Biscay Line it connects Finland with Poland, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom and other European markets. Services to Spain are operated by Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels with air lubrication, high-capacity batteries and solar panels.
Blasco Majorana, Line Manager at Finnlines, said the cooperation shows how shipping companies and industrial customers can cut emissions, and that Green Lane is meant to reduce transport emissions without compromising supply-chain efficiency, turning climate targets into measurable results. Karl Fjærvoll, Sourcing Manager, Liner Services at Stora Enso, said the collaboration supports Stora Enso's climate agenda and that using Green Lane on key routes is a step to reduce logistics-related emissions.
