A commuter has asked the US Coast Guard to investigate an incident in which NY Waterway's ferry Molly Pitcher struck part of the pier while leaving the Belford terminal in Middletown, New Jersey, at about 06:30 local time on 6 October.

Windows shattered and glass fell into the passenger area. Passengers were moved to the upper deck and the ferry continued to Manhattan, after which it was taken out of service for repairs. NY Waterway said no injuries needing medical attention were reported and that it had given the Coast Guard full information.

Monmouth County, which awarded NY Waterway a two-year contract for the service in August, said it learned of the incident from a passenger rather than the operator and is considering all options, including possible legal action. NY Waterway resumed the route on 8 September, replacing Seastreak, and commuters have complained of late departures, longer crossings and crowding.
